Class studies

These are quick studies. Each done in 2 days about 2 hours each. The still life was set up with about 7 items and we were to pick two and draw it and paint it. They were done using a limited palette, meaning only using white, a mixed black (going warmer or cooler depending) and two other colors. 2 of the pieces have a toned canvas of burnt sienna. That means that color was painted over the entire canvas before starting the actual painting. You let parts of that color peek out and it brings a unity to the entire picture. Plus for some reason it is easier to start a painting from a toned canvas rather than its regular white. My favorite is the light bulb on the box (that has a different name)??? Thing thingy madoozle goes around when it's warm. Ya know? The clock and silver wine glass are pretty weak. The clock looks like a piece of toast and has no depth. I was a bit off that day. :) The cup and the tea pot are ok, but my color values aren't as strong as I would've liked, it's all pretty mid-tone. I of course could fix them, but these are just little studies and I have more important paintings to be working on. My current piece is a woodpecker tattooing a tree. Fun, huh? Hope I can pull it off.

It's called a radiometer.

Cool stuff.
The one with the clock makes me think of Salvador Dali.

My favourite is also the light bulb, it's a really good painting!
It's amazing that you've done it in such a short time! I also think that it gives the paintings life, setting a time limit on paintings can be good sometimes. I have a tendency to overwork things to the point where there's no life left in the painting, everything goes stiff. But with a time limit, there's more of a flow.
I personally nearly always stain my canvas or do an under painting before I start painting. I like to do under paint in a fresh green, even though I know most people use sienna or raw sienna or reds.

You've inspired me to do some still life studies now!
